An exam room fails infection control not because cleaners skipped surfaces — it fails because the disinfectant was applied and wiped off before the required contact time elapsed. Most facility managers have no way to know this is happening until a licensing inspection or a patient complaint surfaces the problem.
Our exam room protocol specifies the disinfectant product, the dwell time, the surface sequence and the documentation log for each clean. Crews are trained before first entry. Substitutions require written approval.
What the Protocol Covers
- Exam table surfaces, paper roll change, pillow covers where applicable
- Blood pressure cuff housings, otoscope and ophthalmoscope handles
- Counter surfaces, drawer pulls and cabinet fronts
- Waste container exteriors and biohazard receptacle surrounds
- Light switch plates, door handles and push plates
- Hand hygiene station surrounds (dispenser exteriors, counter below)
- Floors — mopped with diluted EPA List N solution, not general floor cleaner
Disinfectants and Dwell Time
We use only EPA List N-registered disinfectants — products that have demonstrated efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 and meet CDC guidance for clinical surface disinfection. Each product has a manufacturer-specified contact time, which is the minimum period the product must remain wet on the surface to achieve the claimed kill rate. Our crews are trained on the specific contact time for each product used in your facility. Nothing is wiped dry early.
