EPA List N is the Environmental Protection Agency's registry of disinfectants that have demonstrated efficacy against SARS-CoV-2. The list was created in 2020 and has become the de facto reference for disinfectant selection in healthcare, education and commercial cleaning. What EPA List N Means
A product on EPA List N has been demonstrated, through testing submitted to the EPA, to be effective against SARS-CoV-2. Because SARS-CoV-2 is a harder-to-kill pathogen than many common viruses, a product that kills it is also expected to be effective against a range of other pathogens relevant to medical settings — including influenza viruses and many bacteria.
List N includes hundreds of products. Not all are appropriate for medical surface disinfection. The list is a starting point for product selection, not a guarantee that any List N product is suitable for every surface type in a clinical environment.
Dwell Time: The Variable That Most Cleaners Get Wrong
Every disinfectant has a required contact time — the minimum period the product must remain wet on the surface to achieve its claimed kill rate. This is sometimes called the dwell time or wet contact time.
Products vary significantly in their required contact times. Some achieve efficacy in 30 seconds. Others require 4 minutes or 10 minutes to reach the stated kill rate. A product wiped off after 15 seconds has not disinfected the surface — it has deposited a cleaning agent that was removed before it could act.
This is the most common failure mode in medical facility cleaning. It is invisible to facility managers who are not watching the clean in real time. The fix is crew training that specifies, by product, the exact contact time and a protocol for verifying it is not shortened.
Surface Compatibility
Not all EPA List N products are compatible with all surface materials. Some are corrosive to certain metals or can damage exam table upholstery, cabinetry finishes or equipment housings with repeated use. Product selection for a medical facility should account for the surface types present — ideally reviewed with the product manufacturer's technical data sheet before routine use begins.
Quats vs Bleach vs Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide
The three main disinfectant chemistries in medical facility cleaning are:
- Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) — widely used, effective against most relevant pathogens, generally surface-compatible. Contact times typically 30 seconds to 4 minutes depending on formulation.
- Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) — high efficacy, inexpensive, corrosive to some surfaces and metals. Requires careful dilution. Contact times from 30 seconds (at higher concentrations) to several minutes.
- Accelerated hydrogen peroxide (AHP) — effective, relatively surface-friendly, faster contact times on many formulations. More expensive per unit than quats or bleach.
There is no universally correct choice. The right product depends on your surface types, your facility's risk profile and your budget. A cleaning contractor should be able to specify which product they use and why.
